Ich formuliere es mal anders: deine Aussage, es würde dich als Zuschauer "frustrieren", impliziert, dass du deutschen Erfolg sehen willst, nicht deutsche Leichtathleten. Lass mich raten, du bist Bayern-Fan und fandest 2007 Handball plötzlich ganz toll?
Kleinere Felder machen die Sportart insgesamt kleiner. Natürlich könnte man maximal zwei Runden bei den Läufen und nur Endkämpfe bei den technischen Disziplinen machen und damit die Gesamtfelder ca. halbieren. Das bedeutet aber eben auch deutlich weniger Zeit in den Medien bzw. ein kleineres Großereignis, gesunkenes Interesse, weil viele Fans eben die Athleten aus ihrem Land (oder solche, die sie halt gut finden) sehen wollen und von denen würden dann welche fehlen.
Solange eine Sportart insgesamt noch ziemlich groß ist, verlegt man dann im Grunde einfach einen Teil des Bewerbs in die "Qualifikation", wenn man die Felder beim Hauptereignis verkleinert. Nur ist die bei der LA eben dezentral, anders als beim Fußball, wo das Qualiturnier schon eine relativ große Sache ist, die übertragen wird. (Und auch beim Fußball hat man die Felder der Haupturniere in den letzen 50 Jahren immer vergrößert; ich kann mich noch an Fußball-EM mit 8 Mannschaften in den 80ern erinnern.)
Total beknackt wäre natürlich, wenn nur wenige Länder (also etwa DLV) so verfahren, denn das änderte gar nichts am Ganzen, macht es nur für deutsche Athleten schwerer und dt. Zuschauer weniger attraktiv.
