Standbein" zu haben, falls man merkt, dass die Grundgeschwindigkeit nicht reicht um über die Flachstrecken (100 m/400 m/3000 m) ganz nach vorne zu kommen. Wenn man die letzten Jahre oder sogar Jahrzehnte betrachtet, dann ist es für deutsche Athleten relativ aussichtslos auf diesen Strecken auch nur annährend weltklasse zu werden. Angesichts dieser Tatsache frage ich mich, wie sinnvoll es ist jedes Jahr die besten/schnellsten Talente in Disziplinen zu "stecken" in denen sie internatioal nie etwas erreichen werden, anstatt die besten Talente in Disziplinen zu "stecken" in denen sie realistischerweise zumindest ein WM-/Olympia-Finale erreichen können. Meiner Meinung nach findet aktuell einfach eine wahnsinnige systematische Verschwendung von Talenten statt. Es gibt auch erfolgreiche späte Wechsel, bei denen man sich fragt, warum man das nicht eher ausprobiert hat (Krawczik von Kurz.- zu Langhürden). Aber gerade in einer eher brotlosen Sportart wie LA muss man dem Nachwuchs Gelegenheit geben, an internat. U18/20/23-Meisterschaften teilzunehmen und ggf. Medaillen zu gewinnen. Wenn da jemand bessere Chancen im Dreisprung, über Hürden oder Hindernis sieht, wird er/sie das natürlich machen, statt über 100m, 400m oder 1500m zu Hause zu bleben Und ähnliches gilt auch für die Athlet/innen eine Reihe dahinter, die eher über 400 Hürden eine DM-Quali schaffen als über die Flachstrecke.
Wenn Gesa Krause nicht schon in der Jugend Hindernis gelaufen wäre, wäre sie nicht mit 19 in einem (Erwachsenen)WM-Finale gelaufen und ein Jahr später bei den OS London, tatsächlich hätte sie über 1500m vielleicht gerade so an einer oder zwei WM teilgenommen, ohne jede Finalchance.
Zwar gibt es bei den Herren keine solchen Nischendisziplinen mehr wie 400h und Hindernis bei den Frauen, aber auch da ist nicht alles so stark besetzt wie die flachen Laufstrecken.

V.a. ist es aber doch nicht so, dass man da die Wahl hätte! Die besten Sprinterinnen in Deutschland haben bei WM/OS eine kleine Solofinalchance, die Staffel hat aber meistens eine Medaillenchance. Bei den Männern hat momentan keiner eine Finalchance, die Staffel aber mit etwas Glück.
Noch etwas zum Mehrkampftraining: Es ist wahrscheinlich kein Zufall, dass viele der besten europäischen Sprinter der letzen Jahre (Roleder, Visser, Schippers, Warholm) alle ursprünglich Mehrkämpfer waren und sich dann erst relativ spät spezialisiert haben. Ich denke all den gerade genannten hat die späte Spezialisierung auch nicht unbedingt geschadet.
