The first is that elite athletes are, almost by definition, very rare beasts, such that recruiting sufficient numbers to research studies can be difficult. Elite athletes also are busy being elite, and typically don’t want to make changes to their training so that researchers can get a decent paper out of it. Furthermore, there is a lack of consensus as to what defines “elite” in the sporting world, meaning that researchers often state that they studied elite athletes, when they actually didn’t.
