Kritiker unken: Der fährt doch nur als Tourist mit, in Form ist er bestimmt nicht. Rico Freimuth kennt diese Stimmen. „Ich werde mich durchbeißen und alles geben, was in mir ist“, verspricht er. Und wieviel ist er dann imstande zu leisten? „Keine Ahnung“, sagt er und verweigert eine Aussage zu einer Punktzahl, die er für sich in Rio möglich hält. Er tappt selbst im Dunkeln.
Aber nicht mehr völlig. Er weiß inzwischen, was ihn seit dem Herbst letzten Jahres behindert hat. „Ein Bluttest erbrachte ganz schlechte Werte, deren Ursache in einer Fehlfunktion der Nieren gefunden wurde“, sagt Freimuth und wirkt erleichtert. „Ich hatte einen Muskelfaserriss und gefühlt vier Zerrungen und fünf Verhärtungen in den Muskeln. Das hat mich alles zurückgeworfen. Jetzt kann ich gegensteuern“, sagt er und trinkt aus einer Wasserflasche. Drei Liter mindestens zwingt er sich davon nun täglich in den Körper.
Der Hürden-WR Aries Merritt hatte auch Nierenprobleme und musste sich einer Nieren-Transplantation unterziehen.
