Gebrselassie ist zu spät zum Marathon, Bekele zwar nicht physisch zu spät, aber er hatte nicht mehr den unbedingten Fokus und Willen wie Kipchoge.
Das "Purzeln" der Marathonrekorde in den letzten 20 Jahren hat unterschiedliche, aber nicht geheimnisvolle Gründe: Aufwertung durch große Marathons und entsprechende Antritts- und Preisgelder, Anerkennung als offizieller WR, professionalisiertes Training der für die Disziplin anatomisch bestgeeigneten Bevölkerung mit einem starken Konkurrenzdruck usw. Diese Faktoren sind zwar nicht völlig ausgereizt, aber gegenüber ca. 1990 doch weitestgehend. Und Kipchoge hat die größte absolute Verbesserung seit 1967, also seit einer Zeit als noch richtig viel Luft war, geschafft.
Wie in der Let's run Vorschau letzte Woche deutlich gemacht wurde, hatte Kipchoge schon mehrfach WR-Form, nur passten die Schuhe oder das Wetter oder sonstwas nicht. Es ist ein bißchen so, als ob Mayer schon 5 Zehnkämpfe zwischen 8950 und 8999 gemacht hätte, bei denen aber immer irgendwas (eher äußerliches) nicht passte.
