Das der Marathon, im Gegensatz zu vielen “kürzeren" Distanzen, seine ganz eigene Charakteristik hat, hat auch der Lauf von Bekele am Sonntag gezeigt. Ich war an der Strecke (Betreuung…) irgendwo zwischen km 33 und 34 und zu diesem Zeitpunkt hätte ich kein Geld auf Bekele gesetzt. Er wirkte eher angestrengt (oder nur konzentriert ?) aber es zeigte sich hier wieder einmal sehr schön, wie wichtig der Kopf im Marathon ist - Bekele wollte einfach nicht aufgeben und der Körper hat diesmal mitgespielt. Er hat in der Vergangenheit sein Marathon-Potenzial nie wirklich abrufen können und ich persönlich führe dies nicht nur auf die Physis zurück!
Es freut mich aber, denn Bekele war immer ein sympathischer und toller Athlet und die Politik die in Äthiopien derzeit in den Sport reinspielt hat ihm unschön zugesetzt - auch das sollte man in einer Diskussion um Leistung und Erfolge nicht unterschlagen! Manche beziehen aus diesen poitischen Machtspielchen und der resultierenden Benachteiligung Motivation, andere Frustration. Gerade weil ich schon befürchtete, dass Bekele nicht noch einmal groß zurückkommt, freut es mich um so mehr für ihn. Aber auch Kipsang halte ich, gerade in der Niederlage, für einen großen Sportsmann und Charakter! Und Weltrekord oder nicht ist mir ehrlich gesagt egal, wenn es zu solch tollem Rennen kommt.
