Es gibt auch erfolgreiche späte Wechsel, bei denen man sich fragt, warum man das nicht eher ausprobiert hat (Krawczik von Kurz.- zu Langhürden). Aber gerade in einer eher brotlosen Sportart wie LA muss man dem Nachwuchs Gelegenheit geben, an internat. U18/20/23-Meisterschaften teilzunehmen und ggf. Medaillen zu gewinnen. Wenn da jemand bessere Chancen im Dreisprung, über Hürden oder Hindernis sieht, wird er/sie das natürlich machen, statt über 100m, 400m oder 1500m zu Hause zu bleben Und ähnliches gilt auch für die Athlet/innen eine Reihe dahinter, die eher über 400 Hürden eine DM-Quali schaffen als über die Flachstrecke.
Wenn Gesa Krause nicht schon in der Jugend Hindernis gelaufen wäre, wäre sie nicht mit 19 in einem (Erwachsenen)WM-Finale gelaufen und ein Jahr später bei den OS London, tatsächlich hätte sie über 1500m vielleicht gerade so an einer oder zwei WM teilgenommen, ohne jede Finalchance.
Zwar gibt es bei den Herren keine solchen Nischendisziplinen mehr wie 400h und Hindernis bei den Frauen, aber auch da ist nicht alles so stark besetzt wie die flachen Laufstrecken.

V.a. ist es aber doch nicht so, dass man da die Wahl hätte! Die besten Sprinterinnen in Deutschland haben bei WM/OS eine kleine Solofinalchance, die Staffel hat aber meistens eine Medaillenchance. Bei den Männern hat momentan keiner eine Finalchance, die Staffel aber mit etwas Glück.
Ein weiterer Hinweis: in anderen Sportarten würde man über die vermeintlich zu frühe Spezialisierung vermutlich nur den Kopf schütteln - die schwimmen, fechten, rudern nicht erst seit sie 22 sind.
Das heißt nicht, dass sich manche in der Leichtathletik wirklich zu früh spezialisieren, aber es gibt tausend Gründe für langfristigen Erfolg/Misserfolg.
