Mit dem Leistungssport kann es schnell vorbei sein - eine schwerere Verletzung kann dafür reichen. Hinzu kommt, dass es selbst bei größtmöglichem Erfolg in der aktiven Zeit nur wenigen Athleten möglich ist, sich finanziell auch für die Zeit nach der Leistungssport-Karriere abzusichern. Deshalb halte ich es für wichtig, dass Athleten schon während ihres sportlichen Engagements beginnen, sich eine berufliche Grundlage für die Zeit nach dem Sport zu schaffen, also den Weg einer dualen Karriere gehen. In der deutschen Leichtathletik wird viel Potential verschenkt, weil Athleten im leistungsfähigsten Alter nach wie vor ihre sportliche Laufbahn beenden, und stattdessen in das Berufsleben einsteigen – und das, noch bevor sie ihre Karriere als Sportler wirklich ausreizen konnten. Um das zu verhindern, um Sport und Beruf vereinbar und die Leichtathletik somit zukunftsfähig zu machen, ist das Engagement aller gefragt. Der Verband muss das unterstützen, und es müssen Arbeitgeber gefunden werden, die einerseits temporär Freiräume für den Sport bieten und langfristig eine feste Beschäftigung. Solche Möglichkeiten zu schaffen, halte ich für wichtiger, als Fördergelder zu verteilen.
