In dem legendären Rennen in Koblenz ist Thomas Wessinghage am 27. August 1980 hinter dem Weltrekord laufenden Briten Steve Ovett mit 3:31,58 deutschen Rekord über 1500 m gelaufen. Seit nunmehr 40 Jahren ungebrochen, ist dies der älteste DLV Rekord der Männer auf einer olympischen Strecke. Unglaublich, aber wahr: An diesem magischen Abend in Koblenz sind zwei weitere deutsche Mittelstreckler unter die ersten vier gelaufen: Dritter wurde Harald Hudak mit 3:31,96, Vierter Willi Wülbeck mit 3:33,74. Wie stark waren die deutschen Mittelstreckler damals!
